Petrol tanker explosion causes gridlock on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, commuters stranded

Traffic on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway came to a complete standstill on Wednesday, leaving commuters and passengers stranded after a petrol-laden tanker burst into flames directly in front of the NASFAT Camp.

Earlier in the day, the tanker reportedly overturned while moving and caught fire shortly afterwards.

Thick black smoke filled the air, causing panic among drivers and nearby residents.

The fire and blocked road led to confusion and chaos on both sides of the expressway. Part of the road became unusable, worsening the traffic.

Our correspondent, who observed the situation between Ibafo and Arepo, confirmed that many drivers began using the wrong side of the road in a desperate attempt to escape the traffic jam.

Despite the presence of military personnel attempting to manage the situation, many drivers continued to flout traffic regulations, opting for illegal routes to reach their destinations.

This disorganised response caused severe inconvenience for passengers, many of whom were forced to walk several kilometres either to reach their destination or to find clearer routes.
