Denmark has reminded its troops they are legally required to return fire immediately if the U.S. attempts a military takeover of Greenland.

Following White House statements that military force remains an "option" to acquire Greenland, the Danish government has clarified that its military doctrine requires troops to counter-attack any invading force without waiting for specific orders.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that any U.S. aggression against the territory would effectively end the NATO alliance and dismantle decades of post-WWII security cooperation.

While U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is reportedly seeking a diplomatic purchase of the mineral-rich island, Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen maintains that the territory is not for sale and its people remain defiant.
