World Cup 2026: ‘We Made 120 Million Egyptians Happy’ — Hassan

Egypt striker Haissem Hassan says the team is thrilled to have brought joy to millions of fans back home following their victory over Australia.

Hossam Hassan’s side advanced to the Round of 16 at the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 after edging Australia 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw.

Playing their first-ever match in the knockout stage of a FIFA World Cup, the Pharaohs dominated possession, but Australia produced a resolute defensive display to force the contest into extra time.

Hassan Relishes Win Over Australia

Hassan said the team were delighted to make 120 million Egyptians happy with the hard-earned victory.

“Honestly it’s incredible, because you know that in Egypt there are 120 million people you’ve made happy today, and you know that today there will be celebrations across the whole country,” Hassan told FIFA

“Knowing that you made so many people happy makes you happy too. I think it’s a perfect day. We’re very happy, we’re already looking forward to celebrating in the locker room. Afterward, we expect a lot of Egyptian people waiting for us at the hotel. Today is a day to celebrate.”

Tough Victory Under Pressure

Egypt refused to buckle under the pressure, maintaining their composure after Australia equalised with an own goal in the second half.

“Honestly,[it was] a match full of emotion,” added Hassan.

“We started off winning, then they equalized. There were chances on both sides. In the end, everyone knows that with penalties, either you get through or you’re eliminated. There was a lot of pressure, but in the end, thank God, we managed to win. We’ve entered Egypt’s history. Today is a perfect day.”
