Man Utd's problems are no quick-fix - they need a new approach off the pitch

How do you solve a problem like Manchester United?
Since Sir Alex Ferguson rode off into the sunset seven years ago, having delivered United's 20th league title, the most famous club in the world has been mired in mediocrity.
They were well beaten by rivals Manchester City in the Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday night, emphasising the gulf between the two sides.
A total of £948.23million has been spent on players, with United still no nearer to challenging for the title and in danger of missing out on the Champions League for a fifth time in seven years.
They are deficient all over the pitch and need strengthening in so many key areas, it is difficult to know where to begin.
